Springs School Information
Though there are sixteen School Districts in El Paso County, ten service the local Pikes Peak Region in the following Colorado Springs areas: Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, Manitou Springs, Chipita Park, Green Mountain Falls, Falcon, Calhan, Peyton, Black Forest, Widefield, Security, Fountain/Fort Carson, Monument, Woodmoor and Palmer Lake. Below is general information and brief overviews of Colorado Springs School Districts. General School QuestionsEnrollment: Kindergarten and Pre-Schools: Since 1971, all Colorado schools must provide a kindergarten program, although it is not mandatory for pupils. Most districts hold a “Kindergarten Roundup” which pre-registers kindergartners in the spring for the coming year. This program provides prospective students and their parents a preview of what is to come. For those who wish to send their children to kindergarten, the minimum age is five, with the birthday falling on or before September 15 of the year of enrollment. First Grade Enrollment: Minimum entry age for first grades is six years on or before September 15 of the year of enrollment. A couple of districts allow students reaching five years of age by November 15 to take a readiness test for academic work and be accepted upon recommendation. All schools require some proof of age – Certificate of Birth or Baptism. Physical examinations are recommended by all districts and required by some. In accordance with state law all students ( K through 12) must present records showing that they have been immunized for DTP (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis), HB (haemophilus), Hepatitis B, TD (tetanus-diphtheria for children 6 and older), polio, measles, mumps and rubella. Bo student will be allowed to enroll without this information. Special Education: Federal Public Law 94-142 requires public schools to provide handicapped youth with equal education access and in the least restrictive environments. Vocational and Technical Education Pikes Peak Community College The Area Vocational Program at Pikes Peak Community College provides occupational skill development and training for junior and senior high school students from all over the Pikes Peak Region. School districts pay the costs of the program through a contract agreement with Pikes Peak Community College. In some instances, college credit can be earned.
