Colorado Springs School District #11, with approximately 33,000 students
and 1,900 teachers, is the largest school district in the Pikes Peak
Region. It covers most of the city, including Mountain Shadows, Norwood,
Old Colorado City, Ivywild and Rustic Hills. It has 39 elementary schools,
nine middle schools (grades 6-8), five high schools, five alternative
secondary programs (Educational Opportunity East and West, Palmer Night
School, Doherty Night School and the Adult Education Center) and five
charter schools.
District #11 has five teachers who have won the Presidential Award for
Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, seven teachers who have won
the Tandy Prize for Excellence in Math, Science and Computer Science
Technology and eight educators who have been chosen as recipients of the
Governor's Award for Excellence in Education. It is home of the 1993
National Superintendent of the Year, the 1993 Colorado Teacher of the Year
and the 1996 Principal of the Year from Colorado. District #11 has four
educators who each received $25,000 from the Milken Family Foundation for
being named Colorado Educator of the Year. Seventy-one percent of District
#11 teachers have postgraduate degrees, one of the largest percentages
in the state.
District #11 students consistently capture top awards in state and national
academic competitions in forensics, history, geography, writing, foreign
language, vocational education, music, art, English, math and science;
and they rate higher than the state and nation in the standardized tests.
On the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), District #11 high school students
scored 40 points higher points higher than the national average on the math
section and 27 points higher on the verbal section.
In addition to offering a strong core curriculum, District #11 has an
extensive gifted and talented program which includes advanced placement
classes; a special education program which services approximately 3,000
students and a preschool program that is available at 15 schools.
Vocational-technical education offers 16 programs in business and
industrial technology and cooperative work-study programs within District
#11 and 18 others through Pikes Peak Community College. An interscholastic
sports. Each high school offers special programs, such as Palmer's
International Baccalaureate Diploma program and Career Academy, Wasson's
block scheduling plan and Coronado's integrated physics, math and
technology program.
In the fall of 1996, District #11 voters approved a $99.8 million bond and
a 2% operating mill levy override to repair existing schools, build new
schools and implement a district wide educational technology program. Two
new elementary schools open this fall, and groundbreaking for a new middle
school and a new alternative education facility has taken place.
