Colorado Springs Drivers License

The state of Colorado requires new residents to obtain a Colorado Drivers License within 90 days after starting work or 30 days after establishing residency. Colorado adult licenses (21 and older) are valid for four years, provisional licenses (18-21) are valid for three years and beginner's licenses (16-18) are valid for two years. Colorado Springs Vehicle Plate Registration

You must license all vehicles in Colorado within 90 days of moving or 45 days after establishing residency. The license and owner's tax fee is based on the vehicle age and value. Proof of any auto emissions test is required before a license is issued. You must test your vehicle at a designated test station. If your vehicle does not perform correctly at 6,000 feet without adjustment, you may expect an additional fee over the normal $15 test fee. After receiving and passing an emissions test, go to one of the locations below to obtain your license plates:

200 S. Cascade Avenue, downtown Colorado Springs
5520 S. Highway 85-87, Security
5550 N. Union Boulevard, Colorado Springs

When coming from another state, the owner must have verification of the vehicle I.D. number from the old title or registration.

When you register, you should be prepared to pay the amounts charged. Here are the license taxes which are based on vehicle age:

  • 1 year old           2.1% of taxable value

  • 2 years old          1.5% of taxable value

  • 3 years old          1.2% of taxable value

  • 4 years old          0.9% of taxable value

  • 5-9 years old       0.45% of taxable value

The value is the price of the vehicle at the time you purchased it. As an example, if you have a 1 year old family car costing $21,000 and a 2 year old sports utility vehicle costing $25,000, your license tax would be $816 plus the regular license fees.

Emissions Testing

All vehicles operated within an eight-county area in Colorado including portions of El Paso County must pass an emissions test. Proof of passing the vehicle emissions test is required at time of vehicle registration. The program excludes residents of Ellicott, Calhan and Peyton. Maximum test fee is $15. For testing sites, call (719) 633-2333.

Insurance
Vehicle insurance coverage is mandatory and is verified at the time of vehicle registration. The mandatory liability minimum is $25,000 bodily injury, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage.

Child Car Seat
Seat belts must be worn by law in Colorado. Every child under four years old and weighing less than 40 pounds must be in an approved child car seat.
