Relocating Pets to Colorado Springs, Colorado

We love our pets, especially our dogs and cats. We have nearly 90,000 dogs and cats with rabies vaccinations in El Paso County alone according to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. Here is information about licensing them and acquiring new ones:

Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region
The main facility is located at 633 S. 8th Street, 473-1741. Hours for adoption, receiving and redeeming animals, licensing and administrative services are:

  • Monday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Pets are licensed at the Humane Society. A current one-year rabies shot is required (the State of Colorado does NOT recognize the 3-year shots that are common in some states).

The Humane Society offers a 24-hour on-call service for emergency calls and complaints in El Paso County concerning: stray animals, excessively barking dogs, pick up of injured animals, and investigation of reports of cruelty to animals. The animal shelter holds strays and unwanted pets until they are returned to their owners, adopted, or after a substantial waiting period, euthanised.

Dogs:
All dogs within Colorado Springs city limits and the dog control resolution areas of unincorporated El Paso County must be licensed by the time they are four months old. An annual license can be obtained at the Humane Society with proof of current rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccinations are required annually. The leash law is also enforced.

For people living within the Colorado Springs city limits and unincorporated El Paso County, dog licenses cost:

  • $8 spayed/neutered dogs
  • $20 unaltered dogs
Senior citizens receive a discount on license fees for their dogs.

Cats:
Licenses are not required for cats, but cats must be vaccinated annually for rabies and are not allowed to trespass or destroy property.

Exotic Pets:
Pot-bellied pigs are not allowed in the city limits. Lizards and snakes more than 6 feet long require an exotic pet permit, as do poisonous snakes of any size. Permits may be obtained during regular hours, Monday through Friday.
